Lot Details

Russian-born French artist Erté (born Roman Petrovich Tyrtov, 1892-1990) was considered a leader in Art Deco fashion and was an incredibly eclectic and skilled artist who excelled in set, costume, and jewelry design, as well as interior décor, and graphic arts. Throughout his career, Erté designed over 200 covers for Harper’s Bazaar and his illustrations would later appear in Vogue and Cosmopolitan magazines. Most notable in his oeuvre are his depictions of Art Deco fashions adorned by delicate figures in glamorous settings, and which evoke a sense of elegant sophistication. Erté designed costumes for numerous performers and theater groups including the Ziegfeld Follies, Radio City Music Hall, the Paris Opera, and the Folies Bergère, and for Hollywood films such as Ben-Hur, The Mystic, and Dance Madness.
