Lot Details

This stainless steel sculpture entitled 'Double Flapman' by Ernest Tino Trova exemplifies a further variation of his "Falling Man" series. Taking a hypothetical approach to the nature of man, Trova speaks to perspectives of technological angst coupled with imperfections found in humanity. This pair of figures opens, revealing various compartments, symbolizing man as a deconstructed form.

Known for his abstract figurations, Ernest Tino Trova was born on February 19, 1927 in Clayton, Missouri. He was a self-trained American Surrealist and Pop Art painter as well as a sculptor. Trova’s early works maintained a distinctly Abstract Expressionist flair, but he soon progressed to his famous ‘Falling Man’ series, which he explored through a variety of media, styles, poses and forms. His 1963 solo show at the inaugural exhibition of the Pace Gallery, “Falling Man Paintings,” sold out to such institutions as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the MOMA.
