Lot Details

Exectured with a poetic sensibility, Enzo Cucchi’s intriguing surrealistic narrative reflects the emotive and spiritual compositions of Classical Italian art. In ‘La Stanza del Fiato' - roughly translated as 'The Room of the Wind’ - Cucchi establishes a spiritual presence by merging abstract and figurative elements, which are focused around a floating skull, a typical theme in his work. Cucchi’s surrealistic world expresses personal sentiments regarding the myths and traditions of his home country, Italy. This work was included in Cucchi’s significant 1986 solo exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France.

Enzo Cucchi’s (b.1949) dark and dramatic compositions represent Italy’s Neo-Expressionist movement of the 1980s. Bursting onto the art scene in the late 1970s, Cucchi’s work has been widely exhibited in major museums and galleries throughout the world, including two 1986 retrospectives at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee National d’Art Moderne, Paris, France and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY. Recently, his work has been the subject solo shows at Museo delle Arti Catanzaro, Catanzaro, Italy (2011); Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma, Rome, Italy (2010); Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Espoo, Finland (2009); and Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich, Switzerland (2007).
