Lot Details

“Bind” (2004) is a beautiful example of Contemporary artist, Emily Eveleth’s ubiquitous subject matter, the donut. Seen by the artist as a quintessential American food, the artist has painted her signature subject for two decades, beginning in the early 1990s. Eveleth takes the donut away from its literal meaning as a still life, and instead uses it as a vehicle to channel different emotions and moods (often reinforced through her titles). “Bind” depicts a close-up of donuts pressed together; the opening for the burgundy jelly faces the viewer, projecting an air of desire, and overt sexuality. The soft robustness of the donut is reinforced in Eveleth’s paint application, through contrasting highlights and shadowing.

This work measures 17 x 15 inches and is unframed.

Emily Eveleth (American, b. 1960) received her BA from Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts in 1983, and attended Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Massachusetts from 1984-87.
