Lot Details

Edward Kienholz used his art as a way to comment on modern society and American consumerism. “For $87.00” is part of Edward Kienholz’s series of works on paper, each complete with a different stamped monetary value. The artist would then trade each work for the various values specified ranging from $1 to $10,000, successfully contriving his own system of currency. Set within a delicate wash of yellow watercolor, the work is centrally hand stamped "For $87.00" in black ink.

The work is signed and dated “Kienholz ‘69” in pencil, thumb printed on the lower right corner, and framed in artist's frame.

Edward Kienholz (American, b. 1927) used his art as a way to comment on the hypocrisy of modern society and American consumerism through life-size installations referred to as “tableaux.” A major retrospective of his work was held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY in 1996.
