Lot Details

In this acrylic on canvas work by artist Ed Templeton entitled ‘La Favorita’, the surrealist style of the artist is exemplified through his figurative characters and dreamscape background. As a half naked girl stands with a smoking joint in hand, apparitions of other figures appear throughout the scene. A yellow octopus stretches his tentacles out towards the girl as paint drips down across the composition. The faint lettering of the titled is discernible in the candy colored landscape in the background.

Contemporary artist Ed Templeton (B. 1972) is a painter, graphic designer, photographer, and professional skateboarder known for his figurative and abstract works laced with undertones of surrealism. He explores themes of sexism, racism, homophobia, and street culture in his provocative works which exhibit profound honesty and harsh reality within pictorial narratives. His photography employs a photo documentarian style while his paintings and skateboard designs juxtapose more humorous tones within his compositions. Having founded the Toy Machine Bloodsucking Skateboard Company in 1993, Templeton went on to have his first solo show at Alleged Gallery in 1994, and has since exhibited internationally at such venues as Deitch Projects (New York, NY), Modern Art (London, UK), Museo d’Arte di Nuoro (Sadina, Italy), and Mucsarnok Ernst Muzeum (Budapest, Hungary), among others.
