Starting in the early sixties and continuing throughout his career, text has also played an integral role in Rushca’s art, exemplified here in “Vowel #113 (E)” from his series of single painted letters on various book covers. This work was completed in October 1996, right after Ruscha held an influential exhibition from September 11-28, 1996 at Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills. This work is a continuation of that series.

This work measures 4.5 x 4 x 3/4 inches unframed. It is framed in a plexi-glass shadow box measuring 8 x 8 3/8 x 2 ¼ inches. It is signed and dated inside on the first page: “Oct. 5, 1996, Ed Ruscha”

Ed Ruscha (American, b. 1937) was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles (1960). A highly acclaimed artist, he has had recent solo exhibitions at The Getty Museum (Los Angeles, CA), Gagosian Gallery (New York, NY), Brandhorst Museum (Munich, Germany), Kunstmuseum (Basel, Switzerland), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA), Tate Gallery (London, England), Peter Lund Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), and Kunsthaus Bregenz (Bregenz, Austria). Ruscha lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
