Edward Ruscha (b. 1937, Omaha, Nebraska) is an American Pop artist best known for his collages and witty text-based pieces. Ruscha began his career as a commercial artist. His work as a painter, draughtsman, photographer, and filmmaker is strongly influenced by the Californian landscape and the urban environment of Los Angeles, where he lives and works; critiques of urbanism and American commercial culture recur in his pieces. In 1962 Ruscha’s work was included in the groundbreaking exhibition “New Painting of Common Objects” at the Pasadena Art Museum, along with works by Pop artists Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Dowd, Phillip Hefferton, Joe Goode, Jim Dine, and Wayne Thiebaud. Ruscha has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art (2004) and Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (2006), among others. His work has been the subject of retrospectives at many museums, including the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France (1989) and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (2000). In 1972 he had his first major works on paper exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2001.
