Lot Details

Playfully reinventing the movie poster of the classic 1951 film “An American in Paris”, Domingo Zapata’s acrylic and collage on canvas characterizes the artist’s approach of combining American pop with his own distinct approach. Fusing elements of French and American icons, the artist completely infuses his imaginative style into every element of the composition. Transforming Leslie Caron’s visage into a combination of the Mona Lisa and the Statue of Liberty.Zapata obscures the rest of the surface with a scrawling of graffiti-like designs to create a visually dynamic piece typical of his work.

Born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, contemporary Spanish-American artist Domingo Zapata (b. 1974) is known for his figurative and abstract works which employ an incredibly vibrant palette, amalgamated imagery, and references to Spanish culture as well as American Pop icons and celebrities. Working to evoke his poetic imagination, draw the viewer into a world which combines fact with fiction, and create a distinct aesthetic unique to his style, Zapata draws inspiration from past experiences and surrounding environments to execute his work. Known for running in celebrity circles, Zapata has painted numerous iconic individuals including Eva Longoria, Lindsay Lohan, Pamela Anderson, Lady Gaga, and Angelina Jolie, among others. The artist studied at Regents College (London,UK) and American University (Washington, DC). Represented by HUS Gallery, Zapata has had numerous exhibitions with shows at Paris Sud Gallery (Paris, FR), Galleria Carmen de la Guerra (Madrid, SP), and Dove Gallery (Monte Carlo, Monaco).
