Lot Details

"Posterior Torso in Ebony and White Trunks" (1981) is a rare, silver gelatin photograph by Dianora Niccolini, (born October 1936, Florence, Italy) who is widely considered to be one of the female pioneers in the photography of the male nude. Niccolini's specialty is in photographing the male nude starting in the U.S. in the early 1970's.
Hers was a style relegated to homosexual circles and was considered taboo at the time. In 1975, however, the Third Eye Gallery in New York City gave Niccolini a solo exhibition. This was the first gallery exhibit of male nudes by anyone, and is thought to have legitimized and de-stigmatized the male nude in the fine art community. Her influence can be seen in the work of photographers such as Herb Ritts and Robert Mapplethorpe.

She was President of Professional Women Photographers (PWP) from 1979 until 1984. She has taught photography the New York Institute of Photography and at the New York Institute of Technology. Her photographs are in many of the top Museum Collections including: The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC.; The Museum of Fine Arts, (The Allan Chasanoff Photographic Collection), Houston, Texas;
The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, Tampa, Florida;
The Tampa Museum of Art, Tampa, Florida;
The Kinsey Institute (Indiana University), Bloomington, Indiana;
