Lot Details

American artist Dennis Oppenheim (1938-2011) was a conceptual performance artist, earth artist, and sculptor who challenged the man-made, temporal and political boundaries by which we live; during the eighties the artist employed hybrid designs composed of machine parts and architecture as a metaphor for the artistic process.

Oppenheim moved to New York in 1966, and began his career as a performance artist, documenting his works with film and video. By the mid-eighties he was transforming found objects into sculpture, and after the mid-nineties he increased the scale of his work to include permanent, site-specific sculptural installations.

Recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship as well as the National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Grant, Oppenheim was also included in the 1997 Venice Biennale.
