Lot Details

This 2006-2007 work, "Caprice Toasting Felicity's Paintings" by Delia Brown (American, b. 1969) is part of a small series of graphite & white gouache works on paper. The series was exhibited in "Delia Brown: Felicity and Caprice" at D'Amelio Terras Gallery, New York in 2007 and later influenced a series of oil paintings similarly titled "Felicity & Caprice", completed in 2011.

The characters of Caprice and Felicity-- played by Delia Brown, and actress Hollis Witherspoon, respectively-- represent a relationship between an experienced art collector and a young artist. In "Caprice Toasting Felicity's Paintings", you really get a sense of each character through an excellent rendering of body language; Caprice is seen as engaging and confident in her stance, while Felicity seems more shy, reserved, and unsure of herself. Through her narrative of Caprice and Felicity's relationship, Brown creates an air of female support, patronage and friendship. Loosely based on Claude Chabrol's 1960s French drama film, "Les Biches", however, the series ultimately ends in tragedy.

Dimensions measure 19.75 x 27.5 inches unframed. The work measures 22.38 x 30.25 inches framed.

Delia Brown was born in Berkley California in 1969. She received her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1992) and her MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (2000). She has had recent solo exhibitions at Baldwin Gallery, Aspen, CO; Angles Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Gallery Hyundai, Seoul, South Korea; and D’Amelio Terras, New York, NY. Her work has been shown across the US and Internationally. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
