Fashion photographer Deborah Turbeville (b. 1937) dreamed of becoming an actress and left her hometown of Boston, Massachusetts to fulfill her dream in New York City. Arriving at the age of 20, Turbeville began working for designer Claire McCardell, which inevitably led to her career as a fashion photographer. Turbeville’s career flourished throughout the 1960s, becoming fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar and working for magazines like Diplomat and Vogue in the 1970s. It wasn’t until meeting Richard Avedon that Turbeville realized her passion for photography; she began photographing infamous woman in New York public bath houses and luxurious gowns in empty European ballrooms. Her big break came in 1980 when former first lady, Jacquline Kennedy Onassis commissioned Turbeville to photograph the house of Versailles in Paris. Since then, Turbeville has received various awards and recognition; she holds the awards for the Fashion Group Lifetime Award for Fashion Photography and a Fulbright in photography. Most recently, Turbeville released a publication entitled “Past Imperfect”, a survey of her narrative work from 1974-1998. Turbeville divides her time between New York and Mexico.
