David Salle, Untitled, 1984. Watercolor on paper, 25 x 31 inches, 63.5 x 78.7 cm. Signed.

American painter, David Salle (b. 1952) is a leading contemporary figurative artist, with paintings characterized by juxtaposed images and/or images layered on top of each other. Cinematic devices from close-ups and zooms to montage are the basis of many of his paintings. The artist’s interest in film may be traced to his studies at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia with John Baldessari, whose conceptual teachings were also influential on Salle’s early works. After earning both his BFA and his MFA from CalArts, Salle moved to New York, where he worked for several artists including Vito Acconci, and photographed for a publishing house specializing in pornography. Salle's subject matter tends towards the excessive and explicit, while the layers add a deliberate incomprehension; among his earliest pieces are erotic depictions of nudes juxtaposed with everyday objects.
