Lot Details

“Joel at Lower Baldonell House, Dublin 1910” (2003) is a 16 x 20 inch palladium print by the artist duo, David McDermott (American, b. 1952) and Peter McGough (American, b. 1958). McDermott & McGough are known for their faux-historical process of using antiquated methods of exposure and purposely misdating their works, as seen in this titled 1910 image that was actually taken in 2003.

The black and white photograph portrays a full body profile view of a nude man against a background of foliage. The gentleman gives off a sense of power through his stance, with his hand on his hip and his foot standing proudly upon a rock. This photograph is from an edition of 25 and was included in a Jack Pierson curated Photography Portfolio to benefit the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) in 2003-05. The portfolio consisted of 18 photographs by 18 artists, all in a limited edition of 25.

McDermott and McGough began their artist collaboration when they met in New York City in 1980. They have shown at prestigious galleries and institutions such as, Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Cheim & Read, NY; Sperone Westwater, NY; Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich; among others.
