Lot Details

One of the 10 rare prints that were given only to the artist's friends and family members, 'David Choe: Obama' is a print of the painting that is currently on display at the White House in Washington D.C. The original portrait of then-Senator Barack Obama was painted for use in a grassroots street art campaign. Throughout the print, drops of the artist's real blood is featured to signify the pain America suffered before Obama was elected as the first African American President of the United States. Choe is one of the artists who contributed to the Upper Play Ground of artist collaborations in support of Obama’s presidential campaign. Other artists included Grotesk, The Date Farmers, Munk One, Ron English, Alex Pardee, Morning Breath, Mac, and Sam Flores. The print is signed, 'PP David Choe', with PP standing for printer's proof.

David Choe (born 1976, Los Angeles, California) is an American painter, muralist, graffiti artist and graphic novelist of Korean descent. He achieved art world success with his "dirty style" figure paintings—raw, frenetic works which combine themes of desire, degradation, and exaltation. Outside of galleries, he is closely identified with the bucktoothed whale he has been spray-painting on the streets since he was in his teens. Choe's work appears in a wide variety of urban culture and entertainment contexts. He provided the cover art for Jay-Z and Linkin Park's multi-platinum album Collision Course, and created artwork to decorate the sets of Juno and The Glass House. Choe also created murals for both Facebook offices in Silicon Valley upon request from Internet entrepreneur and long-time fan, Sean Parker. These murals were loosely re-created by Choe's friends Rob Sato and Joe To for the set of the film The Social Network.
