Lot Details

Exemplifying the minimalist technique and conceptual design he has since become renowned for, this ceramic work titled ‘Colonne Gris Clair’ by Daniel Buren captures his investigation into the interaction of an object with the space it occupies. Buren uses his iconic stripes of muted gray color as a visual tool to focus the eye and the viewer’s attention upon the work.

Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Contemporary French conceptual artist Daniel Buren (b. 1938) is known for his work of abstract minimalism exploring how visual spaces integrate with geometric forms. Using a limited palette and often employing a stripe patterning, his sculpture and site specific installations question the physical and social environments in which the works are presented and in which the artist works. Playing upon perceptions of space, color, light, and motion, Buren’s thought provoking works continue to challenge relationships between medium, viewer, and venue. The artist’s work has been exhibited at numerous venues including Centre Pompidou-Mets (Mets, France), MUMOK (Vienna, Austria), Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea (Antiago de Compostela, Spain), and Lisson Gallery (London, UK), among others.
