Lot Details

Note: This lot is for two works on paper. Both are unframed and in excellent condition. Dimensions are as follows: "Blue Nude": 7.08in x 5.12in;
"Rhapsody": 5.12in x 7.08in.

Two works on paper “Blue Nude” (1988) and “Rhapsody” (1988) are combined in a dynamic sale which captures famous Vietnamese post-Modern artist's iconic Dang Xuan Hoa’s multi-layered perception of human personages by capturing what he understands, rather than what he see. In Blue Nude his simplified brush strokes release powerful energy with a sense of immediacy. Often portraying people in his everyday life, the female figure is sensually posed and simplified to expose the essence of beauty in the moving form. In “Rhapsody”, Hoa exercises various line thickness to personify a trio of figures in a dance. One figure bows, another bends low, and the third kneels, in an interacting play of conceding acceptance. By lingering his brushes and pausing on certain elements, each figure is depicted with a unique line and gesture to emanate ecstatic feelings of passion and intensity, and interpret a universal common language, and nurture human empathy.

Dang Xuan Hoa (Vietnam, B. 1959) is one of the most important Vietnamese artist of the late 20th Century, and is considered a major painter of the 1990's in South-East Asia. He graduated in 1983 from Hanoi College of Art. His paintings sell upwards of five figures on both the primary and secondary markets with notable museum and gallery exhibitions throughout Asia and Europe for decades and is held by The Vietnamese National Fine Arts Museum and The Singapore National Arts Museum amongst others. The artist was one of the founders of the legendary “Gang of Five”, Vietnamese artists working in the 1990's that were heavily influenced by both Western painting styles and artists, such as Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso, yet also inspired by works of Vietnamese masters Nguyen Sang, and Nguyen Tu Nghiem. The artist lives and works in Vietnam.
