Lot Details

Executed in 2005, this oil painting by Dan Attoe depicts a gentle Minnesota landscape, with a young boy and a tree figuring prominently in the composition. The work belongs to an ongoing series of small-scale oil paintings by the Portland-based artist, whose larger representational paintings unite nature and fantasy with a sardonic, peculiarly American sensibility, sometimes employing hand-lettered phrases to convey irony. Attoe's smaller paintings sometimes conform to this ironical tendency, while others evince a more contemplative outlook. "Suburban Park, Lakeville, MN" belongs to the latter category. As in his 2003 work "Sunset in Western Illinois (On the Way Back to Iowa from Chicago)," the present work is a subtle, earnest engagement with a particular American locale. Painted in oil on medium-density fibreboard, "Suburban Park, Lakeville, MN" measures 6 x 7 inches (15.2 x 17.8 cm).

Dan Attoe (American, b. 1975) is a contemporary painter and sculptor. He is particularly well known for his whimsical, figurative neon light sculptures which hang on the wall, as well as his representational paintings, which combine an American folk art-inspired aesthetic with dark and sophisticated humor. Fantasy and vulgarity are common themes in Attoe's compositions, which often feature ironical or provocative words and phrases. Attoe was born in Bremerton, WA and received his MFA from the University of Iowa. He is a founding member of the artists' collaborative Paintallica. He is represented by Peres Projects in Berlin and Los Angeles, and lives and works in Portland.
