Lot Details

"Angel No. 3" (2007) is one of the most iconic and sought after of the large-scale color photographs that have made female Chinese artist Cui Xiuwen (China, b. 1970) one of the leading Chinese photographers of her generation. Her oeuvre is considered by curators and collectors alike to be ground-breaking Chinese feminist art. In "Angel No. 3" the same young girl or "angel" dressed in virginal dress is obsessively repeated 'en masse', with her eyes closed and in various, dramatic figural poses. In Cui's famous "Angel" series, the images of naive-young girls always represent the universal human spirit, the basic desires which vary little from one person to another, and the longing that many adults possess to return to childhood on some level. This work measures 114.17 x 53.95 inches (290 cm x 137 cm) is edition 7 of 8, is custom diasec mounted and in excellent condition.

The artist was born in 1970 in Heilongjiang, China and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1990 from the Fine Arts Department of Northeast Normal University, Jilin, China and a M.F.A. in 1996 with a focus on Oil Painting from the Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China. She had three solo exhibitions of her photography in 2011 alone including: 2011 “Existential Emptiness,” at Kiang Projects, Atlanta, GA and “Existential Emptiness,” Eli Klein Fine Art, New York, NY; "Discourse on Inner Humanity,” Chongqing Tank Loft, Chongqing, China. Her work has been exhibited and collected in top Private and Museum collections including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; The Florence Museum, Italy; several noteable Museums in China, Korea and throughout Asia and Europe.
