Lot Details

Corinna Heumann is a German artist who goes beyond referencing the artistic giants of the past, juxtaposing their iconic images against one another. In this work, Picasso's Cubist form is rendered in Mondrian's manner, with primary colors and thick black lines that call to mind Lichtensteins benday dot drawings. Aside from their conceptual depth, these works are humorous and exciting, like art history jigsaw puzzles. Heumann’s own intentions are not as lighthearted as the works tend to appear. They are critiques of the unfairness of the art world, a world that is notoriously exclusionary.

Heumann has said, “My work investigates questions of originality and what makes people creative. I like Picasso because for me painting is about thinking with my hands. And in a way, repainting Picasso is like rethinking all of art history.”
