"Cindy Sherman uses herself as the central prop in constructed images in which she explores feminine archetypes and stereotypes. This photograph is part of the untitled mask series that Sherman began in the mid-90s following her prostheses images. The characters she embodies in this series may look bizarre but they also appear vaguely familiar -- like someone we've seen before or a character in a movie.”
