Lot Details

Rarely to market, this long sold out original Fortune Teller watch was created by Cindy Sherman and sold exclusively at Barney's Inc for the benefit of the American Foundation for Aids Research. (AMFAR). It has a ring on top for a chain, so it can be worn as a pocket watch, brooch or necklace - or all three! It makes a superb and memorable gift.

This particular edition was acquired directly from AmfAR, so the provenance is superb. Cindy Sherman designed this exquisite pocket watch in 1993 as part of Art Object project, a collection of limited edition artist-designed objects to benefit amfAR. It is fully functioning and can be worn as a necklace, pocket watch and/or brooch. The watch face is a portrait of a bejeweled Cindy Sherman impersonating a fortune teller consulting a crystal ball, which also doubles as the timepiece itself. This image is a print of one of Cindy Sherman's most famous and memorable photographs - the 1993 Fortune Teller.

This watch is a perfectly functioning wind-up watch, and is designed to be worn as a brooch, or with a chain as a necklace.

Cindy Sherman (B. 1954, Glen Ridge, New Jersey) is a Contemporary American artist who specializes in photography, films, and performance art. Her work explores assumptions of gender, sexuality, and social constructs, through intensely reflective self-portraits based on ambiguous characters Sherman creates. As intuitive and creative as she is, Sherman is able to suggest incredibly complex lives and narrations surrounding her ‘subjects,’ in just a few frames of photographs. Sherman has received numerous awards including the Guild Hall Lifetime Achievement Award for Visual Arts in 2005, the National Arts Award in 2001, and the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship in 1995.

Selected Public Collections: National Galleries of Scotland (Edinburgh, UK) Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, NY) Museum of Fine Arts (Boston, MA) The Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY) Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.) Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York, NY) Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn , NY)

In addition to being a fully functioning watch, this rare work of art is a collectors' item and a great conversation piece as well! It also makes a memorable wedding or anniversary gift. A must have for fans of Cindy Sherman, and for anyone who has visited a soothsayer or fortune teller.
