Throughout his career, Chuck Close has repeatedly used his own face to explore the process of description, creating painted and printed portraits based on photographs, which are deconstructed and rebuilt through distinct markings and abstract forms. Reproducing likenesses through this meticulous practice, Close is able to capture the essence of his subjects by altering the way the image is read. With the many self-portraits composed throughout the years, Close has created a thorough account of his life and the physical, mental, and emotional changes that he has experienced. In this work, Close works from a photograph of himself and presents an almost identical representation using a multicolored grid of various shapes. Seen from a distance, the shapes come together to form the artist’s face.
