This 2005 drawing by Christoph Schmidberger is an enigmatic portrait of a fashionably dressed young man in a graveyard, standing near a headstone marked "KRIS." The work's ambiguity is intensified by the prominent shaft of sunlight cutting into the image from the right, unsettling the viewer's relationship to the subject while serving as a commentary on the flatness of the picture plane.

Christoph Schmidberger (b. 1974) is an Austrian painter and draughtsman best known for representational works, most often portraits, which are characterized by a sensual, ethereal aesthetic and an ironic detachment from the subjects depicted. He has had solo exhibitions at Union Gallery, London, England (2011); Brand New Gallery, Milan, Italy (2011); Patrick Painter Inc., Los Angeles, CA (2007 and 2009); Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2005 and 2007); Goff + Rosenthal, New York, NY (2004 and 2006); and Neue Galerie Graz, Universalmuseum Joanneum, Graz, Austria (2001).
