Lot Details

The store front image of Christo is his most important iconography, starting from the 1960s when one of his first works, as a Nouveau Realiste was to cover a store window in brown paper.
This collage is framed in a plexibox as specified by the artists.
Environmental installation artists, CHRISTO and JEANNE-CLAUDE are known worldwide for "wrapping" buildings, trees, bridges and even islands. The artist-team have created collaged-drawings and proposals as well as documents of their installation art to raise funds for further artworks, but currently make no other permanent works of art. Monumental outdoor and environmental sculptures by the team include: a wrapped fountain in Italy, swathing the Kunsthalle in Bern, Switzerland in fabric, the fabric ‘Running Fence’ along the California coast; and the wrapping of one million square feet of the Australian coastline in ‘Wrapped Coast’. The artists gained both positive and negative criticism for their sculptures and installations, which include the wrapping of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris and the placing of hundreds of miles of umbrellas in a long line along the Pacific ocean between Japan and the USA. In a poignant and meaningful work, Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the Reichstag in Germany, symbolic of healing old wounds between the previously divided state. More recently, they worked on ‘The Gates’ for Central Park in New York City. In addition to these wrapped environmental sculptures, which often require millions of dollars and hundreds of assistants to create and are funded entirely by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, the artists create many collages and works on paper in preparation for each sculpture.
