Lot Details

Artwork measures 45 x 54 inches (114.3 x 137.2 cm).

Intricate and visually alluring, this 2004 acrylic on canvas work by Christian Schumann evinces the artist's unmistakable style of contemporary Surrealism. The palette of sherbet colors and whimsical post-Pop sensibility of "Alaja" create a painterly context in which Schumann experiments rigorously with planar flatness and volumetric shape.

Christian Schumann (b. 1970) is a contemporary American painter whose distinctive candy-colored canvases range from abstract compositions to densely intricate dreamscapes to Surrealist scenes informed by cartoons, comics, and collage. Schumann received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, CA. He has had solo exhibitions at Leo Koenig Inc., New York, NY (2005 and 2008); Patrick Painter Inc., Santa Monica, CA (2004); Gagosian Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2001); and White Cube, London, England (1997), among others. He lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
