This large-scale diptych is one of the most important and visually stunning paintings by Contemporary Indian artist Chittrovanu Mazumdar. The simple colors of red, white and black are used to convey intense content here. The first panel is a detail of the trigger and muzzle of a gun, the second offers a glimpse of a woman in the throes of emotion, painted in black and white biting down sensually on a finger that is in her mouth. The painting also features rows of vertical text that appears sexually explicit, yet as we begin to read the words it soon becomes evident that the sentences are never finished, the thought, the moment never fulfilled. These fragments of text immediately heighten the sense of intensity, longing and desire that is a signature of the artist.

Brutally confronting the viewer, figures, such as the woman and gun, within Mazumdar’s paintings speak to conflicting beliefs and illicit experiences within the individual as well as within society at large. Layering meaning within his fragmented compositions, the artist compels the viewer to witness secreted allusions he’s compiled into his work, constantly teasing out unexplained interpretations. Packed with visual intensity and emotion, the paintings of contemporary Indian artist Chittrovanu Mazumdar (B. 1956) are executed with elements of collage, layered imagery, dynamic brushstrokes, and abstracted forms. Mazumdar has exhibited internationally at such venues as the National Gallery of Modern Art (Mumbai, India), Apparao Gallery (Los Angeles, CA), Bose Pacia Modern (New York, NY), and Jehangir Art Gallery (Bombay, India), among others.
