Lot Details

"Untitled (Yellow Baby)" 2010 measures 15 x 9.5 x 8.0 inches and is made from cast brass painted in acrylic with a painted wooden base. This is unique work and in perfect condition. This work is accompanied by a formal certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

This is a rare and stunning example of the sculpture and paintings of contemporary Indian artist Chintan Upadhyay (b. 1972), and represents his most infamous figural image of the baby that possesses an intellect and mannerisms of an adult. This is a unique bronze sculpture that is hand painted in acrylic paint who stands upright, bright blue eyes wide open gazing towards the future with his 'shadow;' cast behind him in the form of the wooden base he stands upon. Chintan is famous for the incredible attention to the tattooed details covering his figures and here is no exception. In fact this is one of his most visually stunning and successful figures to date--with his feet planted firmly on earth as symbolized by the green foliage and his head in the blue swirling clouds. This torso, arms and legs become a canvas for a narrative that includes a charging centaur at his waist in a rocky and ornate landscape and intentionally reads as a pseudo-myth.

By appropriating imagery and iconography from miniature paintings Chintan is famous for these poignant yet satirical commentaries on the age of materialism, globalization, and current culture. Critiquing the subverted system of values often perpetuated in today’s society, he uses intense visual overload from ancient religions and histories, just as contemporary media advertising does today, to assault the viewer with fragmented symbolism and references to contemporary technologies. The artist has exhibited extensively across the globe at such venues as the Seoul Art Center (Seoul, Korea), Arts India Gallery (New York, NY), National Gallery of Modern Art (Mumbai, India), and Gallery 27 (Oslo, Norway), among others.
