Lot Details

"Untitled" (Dolphin-Dog)" (2011) is a stunning and subversive hand-painted brass cast sculpture in the round by famed Indian multi-media artist Chintan Upadhyay (Indian, b. 1972). This piece measures 8 x 15 x 50 inches and is a unique sculpture (edition 1/1). The work is accompanied by a formal certificate of authenticity signed and dated by the artist. "Untitled" (Dolphin-Dog)" by Upadhyay represents his latest series of hybrid animal sculptures. This creature leaps forward from its dark base with the front half depicting a dolphin with flippers and fin, but the legs and long tail of a dog. This is one of his most visually stunning and successful figures to date--with the yellow base of the animal covered in Indian tribal figurative designs and patterns that make the surface of the piece also acts as a canvas for a narrative that heightens the surreal nature of the piece as well as to its dynamism and humour.

By appropriating imagery and iconography from miniature paintings Chintan is famous for these poignant yet satirical commentaries on the age of materialism, globalization, and current culture. Critiquing the subverted system of values often perpetuated in today’s society, he uses intense visual overload from ancient religions and histories, just as contemporary media advertising does today, to assault the viewer with fragmented symbolism and references to contemporary technologies. The artist has exhibited extensively across the globe at such venues as the Seoul Art Center (Seoul, Korea), Arts India Gallery (New York, NY), National Gallery of Modern Art (Mumbai, India), and Gallery 27 (Oslo, Norway), among others
