Lot Details

"Tree of Life". (2011) is a new sculpture by Indian artist Chintan Upadhyay. (Indian. B. 1972 ) and is made of cast fiberglass and gold leaf with black base. From an edition of 50 and in excellent condition.

"Tree of Life" is a rare, ironic and beautiful sculpture just recently issued by the artist, that belongs to the ongoing series of surreal 'baby' sculptures and paintings by beloved and renowned Contemporary Indian artist Chintan Upadhyay. Here, Upadhyay depicts India's 'new new' Tree of Life as one based on money, consumerism and homogeny, as represented in the many baby heads depicted here that are covered in gold leaf, all the same and all anonymous, that bloom here instead of flowers or leaves. The solid gold truck of the tree stands firm and the black base represents the eponymous shadow of the tree, a metaphor for India's past that the new era will never fully be able to shake. The artist thus ironically makes this figure into a metaphor for the interface between 'Old and New' India. The intense visual overload as seen here is the denizens of babies heads that form a collective gold mass is intentional and possess the same affect that consumerist media advertising does, to assault the viewer with fragmented symbolism and references to contemporary technologies.

Critiquing the subverted system of values often perpetuated in today’s society, Chintan Upadhyay (B. 1972) is most famous for his use the image of "the baby", usually tattooed or covered in traditional and very colorful traditional Indian imagery. The artist is internationally collected and respected by collectors and scholars alike, with his paintings and sculptures selling strong on since pre-2006 to present on both the primary and secondary markets, world-wide. He has exhibited extensively across the globe at such venues as the Seoul Art Center (Seoul, Korea), Arts India Gallery (New York, NY), National Gallery of Modern Art (Mumbai, India), and Gallery 27 (Oslo, Norway), among others.
