Lot Details

"Untitled (Baby Head in Gold)" (2011) is one of the most exciting and rare sculptures in the round by critically acclaimed Contemporary Indian artist Chintan Upadhyay and belongs to this international famed Series of surrealist 'Baby' sculptures and paintings. Here, Upadhyay depicts just the head and neck of a smiling blue-eyed, bald-headed baby whose facial features are painted in bright enamel paints, while his entire head and neck are covered in luminous gold leaf. This harmless yet bizarre visage literally stands alone in space without any context- a commentary on the conflicted directions and changes of Contemporary Indian culture and the country's younger generations. This intense visual overload of Chintan's sculptures and painting is intentional and possess the same affect that consumerist media advertising does, to assault the viewer with fragmented symbolism and references to contemporary technologies. This work is a unique edition (1/1), measures 10 x 11 x 8 inches in the round and is in excellent condition.

Chintan Upadhyay (India, B. 1972) has exhibited extensively at elite Museum and Gallery collections including the Seoul Art Center (Seoul, Korea), Arts India Gallery (New York, NY), National Gallery of Modern Art (Mumbai, India), and Gallery 27 (Oslo, Norway), among others. The artist lives and works in India.
