Lot Details

"Spider Web" (2009) is a sublime painting by exciting young Japanese Contemporary artist Chihiro Nagashima (Japan, b. 1983). Nagashima is becoming internationally sought after for her quietly surreal figurative acrylic paintings on paper, that conflate Western and Japanese painting styles while bridging being defined as ’illustration’ and ‘animation’. Her fantastical narratives are characterized by the presence of young women in surreal situations, depicted in delicate outlines, flat surfaces, and a specific use of bold colors. "Spiderweb" is one of the finest works by Nagashima to-date, with an introspective young woman sitting peacefully at the center of the web. Upon closer inspection, one makes out the entire, surreal narrative, consisting of a group of miniature boys and girls each wearing brightly colored motorcycle helmets, caught in the web around her. This work measures 39.37 x 39.37 inches 9100 x 100 cm) and in is excellent condition.

Chihiro Nagashima was born in 1983 in Shizuoka, Japan. She graduated from Kyoto Saga Art University (BA), with a Major in Oil Painting. She was nominated by TOKYO WONDER WALL award 2004. And in 2007, she was awarded the grand prize in the same award, which was a solo exhibition at Tokyo Metropolitan City Hall. From 2010-2008 Nagashima has been represented by the prestigious Imura art gallery (Tokyo and Kyoto).
