Lot Details

Untitled (Foot-binding Cloth Series) (2011) is a large-scale, intense color photograph by young Chinese Contemporary artist Chen Xiaoxuan (China, b. 1986) that measures 47.2 x 59.00 inches, is from an edition of 9, and in excellent condition. This powerful image depicts 52 portraits of elderly Chinese women between the ages of 90 and 100, each of whom have had their feet bound for over 30 years, a ritual that typically started for young girls in China at age seven. The artist photographs these women's exposed bare feet pointed out unabashedly towards the viewer, a very rare sight, as women's feet were traditionally considered sexual in nature and to always be hidden.

Chen Xiaoxuan was born in 1986 and received his MFA from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, China. His works aim to document and investigate this almost forgotten practice, to uncover the past and literally unbind the minds of the Chinese people. Chen has held major exhibitions at the Yuan Art Museum, Beijing and "Journey of a thousand miles" at the CAFAN+Museum, amongst others.
