Lot Details

"No Big Deal no. 2" (2010) is a rare and dynamic painted bronze sculpture in the round by one of China's top Contemporary sculptors working today, Chen Wenling (China, b. 1969), who is known the world over for a diverse body of sculptural work cast in bronze and/or fiberglass. His smiling red figural works are his most iconic and internationally sought after, such as this piece, from his lauded “Red Boy”series. This work combines both realism and Chinese "gaudy' art yet but must be considered unique to the oeuvre of Chen himself as they are autobiographical in many ways. A diverse range of emotions, including dread, gladness, humor and irony are the main motivations for this series, according to Chen. This work is edition 63/999, in excellent condition and measures approximately 14.56 x 2.36 x 6.30 inches (37 x 6 x 16 cm.).

Following a number of prestigious exhibitions, such as Art Basel-Switzerland and the Shanghai Biennale, Chen is now represented in Asia by OdeToArt Gallery (Singapore) and Yang Gallery (Beijing). Born in 1969 in Anxi, in a small, remote village, Chen grew up making figurines out of clay to entertain himself as his family was so poor that he did not have toys. Chen studied at the Xiamen Academy of Art and Design, then at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. The artist has been the subject of top Museum and Gallery exhibitions including 2010 at The Today Art Museum, Beijing, China, and the Doulun Museum of Fine Art, Shanghai, China as well as a major solo show of new works at the prestigious Odetoart Gallery, in Singapore.
