Lot Details

Chen Man's large-scale color photographs of famous Chinese supermodels are hard to miss and hard to stop looking at, as they cross the boundaries between reality and fantasy, organic and synthetic, present and future. Bold and experimental, female Chinese photographer Chen Man (China, b. 1980) captures color and sensuality like no-one else in the fashion photography industry. "Red Beauty, Wave 2" (2008) is a digitally manipulated c-print that belongs to the artist's iconic "Red Beauty" series of surreal fantasy portraits of Chinese models, measures 67 x 51.25 inches (170 x 130 cm) unframed, is from the edition of 7 and is in excellent condition. Chen's oeuvre has revolutionized the way China and the rest of the world thinks about beauty. Her photographs, although steeped in modernity, are also strongly influenced by Chinese heritage and tradition, with Chen Man confessing that she prefers “authenticity” to “flawlessness”. Her visual vocabulary may explain why her photographs translate effortlessly from museum exhibitions and collections from China to France, Australia to the United States.

Born in Beijing, Chen Man honed her craft whilst studying at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where she learned the progressive, digital post-production techniques she is renowned for. Chen Man is one of China’s most celebrated fashion photographers, working with the likes of Chinese Vogue, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar, Chen Man has also shot for the avant-garde magazine Vision. For i-D’s "The Whatever The Weather Issue, Pre-Spring 2012" Chen Man took The Year of the Dragon by storm shooting twelve stunning covers celebrating the diversity of beauty in China today. She photographed three covers for The Just Kids Issue, Pre-Fall 2012 and her most recent wink Magazine contribution is a cover featuring Chinese actress and icon Fan Bingbing, for The Role Model Issue, Fall 2012.
