Lot Details

Demoiselles Cut-Out, is an impressive collage created by the British artist Chantal Joffe which depicts a group of women seen in the aftermath of bathing. It takes as its source Picasso’s iconic 1907 painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. Joffe’s homage to the work was created in 2006 and shows the artist’s dexterity with the medium of collage. With the simple act of cutting and layering sheets of paper the artist has been able to create a vibrant composition that is imbued with movement. The work is not simply a pastiche of the original work by Picasso but rather a startlingly new interpretation.

Born in 1969, Chantal Joffe studied fine art at Camberwell School of Art, Glasgow School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art in London. She was awarded the Royal Academy’s Woollaston Prize in 2006. Joffe has exhibited nationally and internationally at the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York (2009); University of the Arts, London (2007), MIMA Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (2007), Royal Academy of Arts, London (2005), Galleri KB, Oslo (2005) and Bloomberg Space, London (2004).

Chantal’s often large-scale paintings and collages almost always depict women or girls, sometimes in groups but often as iconic single portraits. Joffe is fascinated by all aspects of women - their bodies, their clothes, their expressions. Her work is full of personality and is influenced by many sources – family photographs, advertising, fashion magazines and photography – in particular the work of Diane Arbus – of whom she says: ‘her work has everything about the portrait of a human that you can ever want.’
