Lot Details

This ‘Untitled’ 1984 oil on wood veneer painting represents Carroll Dunham’s early work where the abstract composition was dictated by the organic patterns of the wood grain. By sometimes mimicking and sometimes challenging the lines and forms of the wood, Dunham creates a controlled chaos within a shallow depth of field. The natural shapes, some resembling animals, that materialize give the drawing a primitive feel, while the characteristic existence of sexual semblances assert the work’s unique contemporary framework.

This work comes framed, measuring 16.75 x 21.75 inches, framed.

Influenced by Surrealist content and Art Brut techniques, Carroll Dunham (b.1949) creates psychedelic, erotic universes that probe the human psyche in his semi-abstract paintings. Establishing himself in the 1980s with colorful, non-representational paintings on word veneer, Dunham expanded his oeuvre with figurative, cartoon-like illustrations that highlight his lurid sense of humor. Born in New Haven, CT, Dunham graduated from Trinity College, Hartford, CT in 1972. In 2004, he was awarded the Skowhegan Medal for Distinction in Painting. Featured in the 1979 ‘Young American Artists’ at Schema Gallery, Florence, Italy, Dunham’s work has since been widely exhibited at major museums and galleries throughout the world, with recent solo shows of his work at Gerhardsen Gerner, Berlin, Germany (2011); Gladstone Gallery, Brussels, Belgium (2011); Blum & Poe Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2010); Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany (2009); Skartstedt Gallery, New York, NY (2008); and White Cube, London, UK (2006). Dunham lives and works in New York, NY.
