Carrie Mae Weems (b. 1953, Portland, OR) is considered one of the most influential contemporary American photographers. She consistently investigates the meaning of power and what it means to engage and challenge it. Her work deals with racism, colonialism, gender relations, politics, personal and cultural identity, yearning, and loss. Where and When I Entered the British Museum shows her determination to enter the picture both literally and metaphorically. She embodies the black female artist demanding entry to the bastion of white male culture. Weems studied at California Institute of the Arts, University of California at San Diego and University of California, Berkeley. She has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, International Center of Photography, J. Paul Getty Museum, High Museum of Art, Walker Art Center, and the Whitney Museum.
