Lot Details

"Proof of the Youth No. 5" (2008) is one of the finest examples of the sublime realist paintings by Chinese Contemporary artist Cao Xiaodong (China, B. 1961) that speak directly and ironically to the social and cultural differences between East and West. Cao visually divides the canvas evenly at center and compares what appears to be vintage photographs of two women. On the right half of the canvas stands a young, beautiful Chinese woman depicted in the asexual PRC 'uniform' intentionally hiding her physique, with her long hair in braids and covered by a cap, her "proof of youth" absorbed by the Cultural Revolution in China. In vivid contrast, on the left side of canvas stands a beautiful blonde American woman, dressed in the seductive "uniform" as a Playboy Bunny, her "proof of youth" clearly celebrated here, during the Sexual Revolution in the U.S. and Europe. This painting measures 70.85 x 70.85 inches (180 x 180 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Cao paints using a unique version of the pointillism technique, painstakingly applying thousands of tiny dots of oil paint by hand onto the canvas, each work taking months to complete. In his "Proof of Youth" Series, Cao includes computer prompts such as "OPEN" and "EXIT" seen here, as well as crop lines and demarcations he uses when scanning in original photographs.

Cao Xiaodong graduated from Industry Design College, Jiangnan University in 1982. Notable Solo Exhibitions include: 2009 "Cao Xiaodong Abstract Solo Exhibition", Egg Gallery, Beijing, China; 2008 "Cao Xiaodong Solo Exhibition", Ode Gallery, Singapore and "Save As", Virginia Miller Gallery, Miami, USA. Selected Group Exhibitions: 2011 "History and Future", Soemo Fine Arts, Beijing, China and in 2010 "Link," at the Shanghai Mingyuan Art Museum, China and again in 2010 "Trace" ,Time Museum, Beijing and was also invited to exhibit at "The 25th Asia International Art Exhibition", Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
