Lot Details

“Butterfly” is a dreamy redolent figure painting by Contemporary Chinese artist Cao Jingping (B.1972), who is renown for his emotionally significant Modern take on Chinese painting. Soft subtle blended hues depict the basic torso of a female nude, which is preceded by two enlarged butterflies and transposed feathers. Jingping’s works consistently employ such symbols to reference the metamorphosis of life and nature, as well as the destructive forces of an evolving society and contemporary existence, but in harmonic formally beautiful configurations. Subsumed by the present day consumer culture of media and billboard signs, the artist comments on true natural beauty and the loss of time and history amidst the encroaching artificiality of the world he lives in. This work measures 31.5 x 23.62 inches and is in excellent condition.

Cao Jingping was born in Chongqing and obtained an MA from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1999. He has several solo and group exhibitions in major galleries and museums like the Schoeni Art Gallery in Hong Kong, MOCA Shanghai, the National Museum of Contemporary art Korea, Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, and many others. The artist currently lives and works in Beijing.
