Candida Höfer is admired for her sober photographs of interior spaces, often in public buildings that are centers of cultural life, such as schools, libraries, churches, and museums.
Höfer is considered a member of the Düsseldorf School, which evolved under the influence of Bernd and Hilla Becher. From her mentors, she acquired a preference for stark images and subjects that could be developed as series. Her photographs are not merely documentary, but reveal repeated forms within public spaces, unearthing patterns of order, logic, and disruption, imposed on interiors by their absent creators and inhabitants. In Höfer's own words, her photographs capture the “psychology of social architecture.”
