Lot Details

Hofer's photograph of "Palacio Real Madrid V" frames a stunning view of one of the palace's baroque interiors. Built circa 1738, Palacio Real has been the home to countless Spanish royals over the centuries and remains one of the most visited places in Madrid with works by Mengs, Velázquez, Tiepolo, Caravaggio, and Goya decorating the interior. Yet, instead of focusing on the works executed by infamous artists, Hofer focuses on the inherent beauty of the interior itself; adorned as it is with lavish marble columns, richly woven carpets, and intricately molded features.

Candida Hofer (B. 1944, Eberswalde, Germany) is a contemporary artist whose work often reflects her interest in documenting public spaces and collections, as apparent from her images of office interiors, libraries, churches and museums. Capturing repetitious objects such as furniture, windows, and lighting fixtures, Hofer allows for a certain aesthetic clarity and evoked sense of purpose in her work. She creates a maintained order and balance, while concurrently heightening the inherent sense of beauty found in each of the spaces she photographs.
