Lot Details

With a stunning contrast of day-glow colors, this visually engaging acrylic on canvas work titled 'Recreation' captures Calvin Brown's iconic approach to geometric abstraction. With an interplay of two sharply opposing patterns and various colors, Brown creates a dynamic composition which never allows the eye to rest in one area for long.

Contemporary artist Calvin Brown is known for his works of geometric abstraction which explored various optical designs. Built up using geometric patterns and vivid color contrasts, Brown created complex visual illusions from two dimensional surfaces. Having received his BFA from Cooper Union in 1974, Brown went on to receive his MFA from Yale University in 1978. The artist has exhibited at such galleries as Genovese/Sullivan (Andover, MA), and is currently the assistant curator of Princeton University Art Museum's Modern and Contemporary collection.
