Lot Details

"Knives Out" (2012)" is one of the most dynamic and visually arresting of the powerful abstract oil and cold wax paintings by Contemporary American painter Bill Fisher (B. Buffalo, NY, US, 1957). This dynamic five-by-five foot is one of the artist's newest paintings from his decade-long series of large-scale oil on panel works that have gained him international acclaim by collectors, curators and critics alike. Painting in a post-modern environment, Fisher's work combines his experiences of living and painting in New York City in the 1980's, his interest in street art, and the admitted influence of artists such as Basquiat and Twombly.
Knives Out" is a magnificent example of Fisher's completely assured and rigorous thematic vocabulary and iconography, with bold colors and content, such as the large bladed knife and arrow that are depicted in a naive, almost cartoonish manner. The confluence in this work of a bold and colorful shapes, dots, objects, tic-tac-toe boxes, and scrawled text are all tempered by Fisher's iconic cool, white background. This work is Fisher at his best, with a unique compilation of visual information, appropriated diagrams, icons and signage that are singular in their manner of expression and composition. This work measures 60 x 60x 2 inches and is unframed and in excellent condition.
