Working with clay for over 4 decades, Betty Woodman continually pushes the traditional perceptions of the medium, bringing contemporary ceramics into the realm of fine art. Her work demonstrates a range of art historical influences, including Minoan art, Chinese Tang dynasty glazes, Italian Baroque architecture, and the paintings of Matisse and Picasso, all of which boldly and brilliantly blend in a contemporary way while celebrating both tradition and the material. This is wonderfully expressed in her vases and balustrade reliefs, which can be both an abstract and metaphorical subject matter. In ‘Balustrade Relief Vase #2-00’, Woodman’s interest in Italian balustrades and the abstract forms their surfaces and shadows make is echoed in the colors and shapes in the surface painting.
