Lot Details

"Portrait of a Woman" (1995) is a vibrant and large-scale figurative, important oil painting by famous Post-Modern and Contemporary Pakistani artist Bashir Mirza (1941-2000), who was known for his ability to paint in diverse artistic styles, including abstraction, realism, and non-objective art. In turn, a oil painting by the artist is rare, as he tended to paint most often in acrylic. His most important works are his colorful figural, cubist-inspired works, and this intense, cropped portrait of a nude seated woman is a powerful example of Mirza's best paintings. This work combines the colors and palette of South Asia, purple, yellow, magenta, blue, with Western-influenced techniques. Infused with an stunning emotional symbolism and a brilliant palette, Mirza's definite brush strokes in this painting span from incredibly energetic to the tightly controlled. Unframed dimensions: 36 in x 24 in (91.4cm x 61 cm). This work is professionally framed and in very good condition.

The artist has been the subject of many Museum and Gallery exhibitions world-wide, with solo and group shows at the Seoul Museum (Seoul, Korea), Ejaz Art Gallery (Lahore, Pakistan), and Majuma The Art Gallery (Karachi, Pakistan), among others. The artist was posthumously honored in 2006, when Pakistan Post issued stamps with the portraits of Mirza and 9 other famous Pakistani artists.
