Lot Details

Ayako Rokkaku was born in the Greater Tokyo area of Chiba in 1982. Despite her young age, Ayako has gained a great deal of popularity in Japan. Early in her career, Ayako was recognized by Takashi Murakami and was promoted by company KaiKai KiKi as a cutting edge young Japanese artist to watch. Since her very successful debut performance and exhibition at Art Basel’s 2006 fair, Ayako has been exploding on the international art scene.

Her unique style, an expressionist, frenetic twist on contemporary Japanese animation, is achieved by using nothing but her hand to apply the paint directly on the canvas.

The main subjects in her work are close up depictions of young children with the long arms and large eyes. These brightly colored figures fill the stage and are usually absent of any discernible background setting. Forced to solely focus on the figures themselves, we begin to see the complex, often hostile, expressions and attitudes emanating from these seemingly innocent sprites.
Ayako was recently featured at the Kunsthal museum, Rotterdam, Netherlands and is included in many notable private and institutional collections.
