“Explorer Glacier III, Alaska” presents a horizontal expanse of glacier in shades of blue and white, exemplifying this conceptual photographer’s work. Known as a "landscape painter" among contemporary photographers, Axel Hütte is one of a generation of German artists, including Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff, and Andreas Gursky, who studied under Bernd Becher.

Born in Essen, Germany, Axel Hütte (b. 1951) is a contemporary photographer. He studied with Bernd Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf; during this period, he shared a studio space with artists Andreas Gursky and Thomas Demand. In 1982, Hütte received a DAAD scholarship to study in London. He had his first solo exhibition in 1984 at the prestigious Konrad Fischer Galerie in Dusseldorf. Hütte went on to show at important international venues, such as Rotterdamse Kunststichting, Rotterdam, Netherlands (1989); the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany (1993); the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Bonn, Germany (1995); the Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland (1997); and the Foundation for Photography, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2001). In 2004, Hütte's work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain.
