One of India's most famous photographers working today, Indian Contemporary artist Atul Bhalla has achieved international success for his series of color photographs, which explore social, political and environmental issues of his native country. One of the recurring themes in Bhalla’s work is water, as seen here in one of the large-scale images from his famous "Yamuna Morning" series. Since 2005, he has featured India’s sacred Yamuna River in his series of photographs entitled “I Was Not Waving, but Drowning,” which calls attention to the increasing water pollution caused by urbanization. Through interesting juxtapositions of cultures and times, as well as autobiographical themes, Bhalla’s works highlight and raise questions about the potential consequences of straying so far from ancient traditions and cultures, and embracing modernization. Bhalla received his BFA from Delhi University and his MFA from the School of Art of Northern Illinois University. He currently lives and works in New Delhi.
